Dramatica Pro is a wonderful tool for writers. When used properly, it will help the writer to produce a thoroughly developed work. Is it easy to use? No, not by a long shot. But it is well worth it to deal with the learning curve because it will help you in ways you can't even fathom at first. It forces you to consider how the story should unfold and what elements should be included.

If you're a "by the seat of your pants" writer, you might want to give the software a chance because I'll bet it can help you identify holes in your story. Keep in mind that there's a 90 day money back guarantee. This should be long enough for you to figure out if it will work for you or not.

I read a review that indicates that the software does not work on Vista. Not so. When I purchased the software in February 2009, I checked first to see if it would be compatible with Vista (which it is) and how I would need to do the install. The FAQ section under the Support tab deals with installing the product on Vista. Using those instructions, I installed the product on my computer and had no problems whatsoever.

For those who expect this software to write the story for you, think again. To my knowledge, there is no software on the planet that can take on this task. If you have a great idea for a novel, then learn how to write a novel. Don't expect the software to do something impossible. If you don't want to learn how to write, then hire a ghost writer.

I am very upset that I just paid all this money for it and the product won't even install on Vista. That's extremely frustrating. I do have an older PC, which it will run on, and I've had some use for it, I don't quite like the interface, it's not very graphic friendly, -large blocks of text, not so many visuals, but I'm sure it will prove to be useful- only I can't use it on my main computer which I can't stand

Most authors employ both a creative and an analytical process in structuring a final story--one to write with and one to edit with. Dramatica Pro is the perfect tool to guide you through both processes. Be aware, however, that the program makes you work. Hard. When used correctly, Dramatica pushes you into forming characters with depth; you'll never hear a reader say "he/she would never do or say that." Dramatica forces you to focus on developing a story rich with plot tension and thematic development; there will be no "holes" to trip you up. Dramatica's main desktop is the gateway for all story-building. Take the time to explore each tile and the wealth of information at your fingertips. Start with the query system and answer each question. You'll be surprised at how much you don't know about the story in your mind when you begin and how much you do know when you're finished. If, like me, you are a "seat of the pants" writer, don't pass on this superb advisor assuming you don't need it. Write your story, input the information into the appropriate tiles and find out how much you've missed that would make your story much, much stronger.

Caveat: if you are looking for a program that will write your story for you, this is not it. If you're looking for a program that will correct poor prose, poor spelling, bad dialogue, point of view errors, etc--this is not the program for you. If you want a writing partner that will nag you into producing a strong plot structure, a well developed theme, and a rock solid foundation, then Dramatica is your choice.

The program is not easy, but it is "user friendly." If you spend some time understanding the terminology and the plethora of tools available to keep you focused on the story you want to tell, Dramatica Pro will repay you with stories others will want to read/watch.

I've been using this theory and software on all of my projects since 1997 and every time it has helped me write a better, more inventive and better-structured story. Sure, it was a steep learning process--but writing is in essence a steep learning process--and writing with Dramatica gave me a clearer understanding on how stories work and how all of its parts work together. This is specially useful in the development process, when you need to know how each of your elements work in order to preserve your original idea through the rewrites. In fact, Dramatica made the learning curve shorter: after writing the first drafts with it, taking notes from a producer is a breeze.

I am a successful writer of nonfiction who had a lot of difficulty making the transition to writing fiction.

The first drafts of my novel were awful -- boring characters, confused themes, vague storylines.

Then I got Dramatica Pro. It was the breakthrough I needed.

It asked me all the important structural questions, and in struggling to find the best answers I brainstormed various ways to improve my book (please excuse the pun) dramatically.

I happily set Dramatica aside and kept writing additional drafts of my novel. Because I was basically on the right track, the remaining structural problems with it grew smaller and smaller and smaller. I cannot stress how disappointed I am in Adobe, and how distraught I am that we as a nation have allowed the only two competing companies to join, thus guaranteeing that there will be less quality and innovation in the future. My intro to Creative Suite was via the Windows version of inDesign 1.0 and Illustrator. In the five years (?) since, I've switched from those stand-alone products to the entire Creative Suite for the Mac. Most of my time is with those two packages (illustrator and inDesign) as well as with GoLive and Version Cue.

Illustrator has always been (for my 5 yrs), and remains, excellent. My prior experience has been with Visio and Aldus Intellidraw (does anyone else remember that product?). Illustrator has the usual Adobe peculiarities which, once familiar, prove to be incredible time savers.

For someone who would be satisfied with MS Word, if it worked properly, inDesign is good -- but overkill (and I mean that well). Still, I spent 4 solid years with it, before moving on (?) to Apple Pages (it's better than Word, but lacks high-end features of inDesign that I don't need most of the time). inDesign, to my experience, works nearly flawlessly. Coming from an office that is very Word orieinted, my only complaints with inDesign are (i) steep Adobe-like learning curve, and (ii) tough exports to MS Word. As to point (i), inDesign is similar to the other Adobe products, hence, the time you spend with inDesign will benefit your usage of Illustrator and vice versa. As to point (ii), exporting works fine -- you just have to do it "story" at a time.

As to GoLive, I do simple web page creation and editing. GoLive is more than adequate for these functions and, I must say, I like it. Having come from a Front Page background (5 yrs ago), I found GoLive a little difficult to understand, at first. However, once I got the hang of it (over one solid weekend of playing around), I liked it. Early versions struck me as a little unstable (e.g., going back to GoLive 5, if I recall the number correctly). However, the recent versions have been just fine.

Version Cue is a interesting. I relied on it heavily for 3 yrs and I still do, to an extent. It's great for holding Version Cue product. However, don't get tempted, as I did, to use it as an extranet for folks outside your organization. It was not intended for that, I don't think, and does not do it well. That said, it's a cool way to store not only the many files created by inDesign, Illustrator, etc., but also related MS Word, Excel, PDF, and other files. Overall, the product works "pretty well." I relied on it for some fairly heavy and time-sensitive products, without failure. Still, there were times with the earlier versions that I wondered whether it was going to leave me in a lurch. It never did. The more recent version seems stabler, though, I do find myself migrating over to a more conventional DAV server for the same functions (albeit without versioning).

One gem in the new product is Adobe Bridge. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, except as a "desktop" that's great at viewing Adobe files. (Go figure!). It allows you to bounce around your local drive (as well, potentially, as network drives and Version Cue projects) to visualize your Adobe files. The integration is great: not only do you get high-res thumbnails, you can page through the Adobe files without opening the underlying applications.

Bottom line: second to my Powerbook (and the Apple software that came with it), Adobe Creative Suite CS 2 is the best computer product I own.

"Working flawlessly" 2005-12-18

This suite installed and is working flawlessly in my Mac G5. The reviewer who was not able to install this suite may do better to complain about his machine. I shall deal with some of the comparative issues that may be useful for buyers contemplating this purchase alongside an alternative; the Macromedia suite being the most obvious example.

I do most of my development on Eclipse, IBM's Open Source Integrated Development Environment. It is the platform of choice for Java web application development, and comes with plugins for editing XML, HTML and CSS. When purchasing the Adobe suite, I was not intending to migrate front-end development to CS2. Indeed, one of my colleagues - an affectionado of Fireworks - refers to GoLive as Adobe GoDead. Fireworks, indeed, has some very nice designers' layout tools, but nothing I have not found in the Adobe suite too. My initial requirement was for the graphical tools, Photoshop (unquestionably the best, irrespective of what the Gimp fans out there say; Gimp just does not make the grade) Illustrator, and Acrobat (not just the reader).

I decided to purchase the suite since the all up price was about the same as the three applications I wanted, and am glad that I did.

The Bridge proved very useful for quickly navigating between applications and from desktop to application - with a more flexible and configurable interface that OS X's Finder. Although I use Subversion (we recently migrated our repository from CVS to SVN), generating and keeping patches of large graphics files does not work properly, if at all on some formats, and the Adobe Version Cue became my choice for a graphics repository. No doubt you can see where I am going. Bit by bit, I found myself using more of the CS 2 suite, despite the fact that I have a range of state of the art tools on my servers and workstations, tools I already know rather well, and which are used by my employees. Despite these barriers, the Adobe CS 2 has become my preferred platform for front end development - yes, even GoLive. I shall not go through lists of features and their relative advantages. There are too many. If my experience is representative, then you too should expect to find excellent value for your investment in this package.

The suite is not a toy. It is a professional-team-based-development environment. It requires training to use effectively. I recommend that you get yourself Adobe tutorials to augment the help files; the help files I found rather cryptic and not suitable for learning from. The "Classroom in a Book" series is somewhat elementary, nevertheless covers the basics in a comprehensive series of tutorials. Experienced users, and anyone upgrading, will find it possible to skim rapidly through these. There are enough enhancements to the CS 2 (and at times somewhat gratuitous changes of menu organization) that even experienced users will obtain a worthwhile return on the time invested in these books. I regret that there is no Classroom in a Book for Version Cue - it could have had its own. Indeed, I will go so far as to say that the instructions for Version Cue that are included in the help files are woefully inadequate. Adobe, pay attention. Your help files (and the comments in the books) for this item are composed of self congratulatory advertising, and are not at all helpful.

The Adobe Creative Suite 2 is strongly recommended. And if your computer won't install it, well then... why not upgrade to a Mac G5 while you're at it? Now that is a combination not to be beaten.

The Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS2 is an awesome product. I'm a scientific illustrator and this new CS2 contains almost all the software I need for my illustration and graphic design work. There are a lot of significant improvements over the previous CS version. Of all the programs I use Illustrator the most. Illustrator's new "live trace" and "live paint" features are really cool! Each of the programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, and Acrobat) work very well together. The new Bridge is great for finding and previewing image files. Photoshop and Illustrator are the industry standards. If you do professional work this is the best software to have. The price may seem a little steep, but in my opinion it's well worth it. I highly recommend this product.

All products are superb. e,g the Workspace feature in Photoshop is a dream, it opens preselected floating windows that relate to the type of tasks you are performing.

But the licensing is draconian. I thought I was buying a product bundle that I can install on different machines. But it turns out that you need to install all products in the suite on the same machine.This needs to be very clearly declared in all promotional materials for this suite so people like me can make better purchase decisions.

The CS3 software is, as previous Adobe releases have been, great. Very great potential for creating and altering your own work, easy to use once you got your head around it, and with good interconnectivity.

However, there are a couple of problems, as one reviewer also points out. Firstly this software is rather pricy and quite greedy memory wise, which is a bit of a bother. Secondly, as the same reviewer also remarks on, installing and uninstalling these products can quite quickly turn into a proper nightmare finding small obscure files in obscure places on your harddrive and risking your entire hard disk in the process. Thirdly, and this is connected with my second point, Adobe dosen't seem to care about anything but themselves. Their obsession with anti piracy implementations becomes a weight around the paying users ankles, and, as far as I know, dosen't slow down the pirates. Their customer service is unfriendly at best, and their greed second to none (this is sort of expensive software).

In the end though, I wouldn't recommend any other software because this is the best out there, but it would be nice with an alternative. If only for the sake of shaking up the people at Adobe.

As a Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign user since the very start Adobe has it easy. They have made the dominant series of software for so long it is a given that they should continue their regime.

The problem is they have gotten insane with power. Without anyone to check them, the price grows along with the absurd use of memory.

Examples:

- Adobe used the worst installation process ever created by man and made a quick joy of using new programs into a day or two slog through hell. If there ever was a reason to pirate software, this punishing of paid users is definitely it.

- You can't throw this application away. You need to find a hidden program in your computer to uninstall it first, then trash.

- If you accidently trash it you need to run a script that they provide. The problem is this script (which isn't exactly simple) could erase you hard drive. Have fun!

- If you decide that you'd just like to reinstall after trashing you can't. You need to use the script. A bit of DRM will not allow this to be installed, thus forcing you to potentially destroy your computer so they can avoid possible piracy.

- Bridge while in concept is nice, is in functionality, less then useless.

- Stock Photos? See above.

- And Acrobat is the crown jewel of uselessness. It is so bloated and unintuitive it makes me wish Adobe had some real competition. When every other program can open a PDF faster then the company who created the file type you know there is an issue here.

- Updates are welcome. Auto-updates are even nicer. That is until you learn the hard way that auto-updates delete preferences and color-palettes. So behind the scenes you are about to lose all of your work randomly. Sweet.

- The improvements to all other applications are fairly minor outside some solid GUI tweaks

My main complaint here is that the much touted connected community of applications still doesn't work. Transferring from one application to another is meant to be seamless and quick, but it is still a chore. These are not streamlined apps nor are they speedy workhorses - they are stuck in between and set to make very few power users happy. Even less for first time folk.

On the plus side, the intel boosts are wonderful. And the rewritten InDesign makes me love that I switched from Quark so long ago. The new Flash is nice, and it integrates the best of all, but Actionscript 3 is a major step backwards in my opnion. It is far too code oriented for designers, and almost useless to coders.

But in total, if you have a version of any of these apps on your computer this simply isn't worth your money or your time.

iLife is a terrific suite of products - iWeb is especially simple to use and creates a surprisingly elegant websites quickly and without requiring any particular experience in web design. The new templates are well considered, and offer sufficient variety. IPhoto is an extremely good way to organize your graphic images - if you already have everything stored and organized, you can import the image to iPhoto without actually copying it from your hard drive location, thus saving you memory, and enabling you to utilize the organizational power of iPhoto. Because iTunes is constantly updating, you may find, as I did, that this suite has a conflict with iTunes. I had to reinstall iTunes from the web. This was quick and did not disrupt my library in any way. It was, however, a surprise - so, now you know.

"Fun, Helpful Even for Adults" 2008-10-18

It's animated, you hear the notes, it introduces classical scores from Verdi and others, it has engaging, challenging yet fun drills and exercises that really help in ear training, learning music theory, and more.

Why can't other softwares and programs be more like this? I have Musition 3 Single User Student Edition for Windows, eMedia Earmaster 5 and Auralia 3 Single User Student Edition for Windows and they're all boring and dull compared to this (although I kinda like Auralia because it goes to more advanced drills and exercises) But yes, why can't they all be fun like this one?

It would be nice if Music Ace does the more advanced lessons too, like chords, intervals etc.

Harmonic Vision Music Ace 2 Our eight year old son loves to play piano and keyboards, but getting him excited over learning how to read the notes on a staff or about time signatures was very tough. He just loved to play, but he didn't like working in a music theory workbook. Music Ace 2 is an interactive, thorough program that is fun for kids beginning to learn about music or even for kids that are just curious about it. The "professor" is your guide through about two dozen lessons and is very supportive and patient. The games that support each lesson are a lot of fun to play, and reinforce the lesson. An excellently designed program overall and well worth the price.

The only drawbacks are that it is a bit dated. I purchased mine in June, 2007, and it's nearly identical to the one my son's piano teacher uses. She says she purchased her Music Ace 2 in 1999. Also, on our computer, the graphics do not display in full screen (our resolution is 1024 x 768) and there is no way I've found to maximimize the program to fit our screen.

So, if you don't mind an appearance that appears a bit dated, Music Ace 2 is an excellent way to get your children excited about learning music theory.

I got iDrum to produce beats to use in Garage Band and it works very well. There are a number of preset kits but you can create your own from all the samples included. There are a good variety of types of drum sounds for different styles. You can either create drum only song arrangements in iDrum or use it as a plug-in in your recording program. What I love best about it is how intuitive to use it is. I fired it up and immediately figured it our without any help.

Reason 3.0 was my first foray into the world of software synths. Though I'd done some MIDI sequencing with pre-Sonar versions of Cakewalk (and even further back with EZ Vision and a Mac Classic), all of my sound producing tools (guitars, bass, synths, drums) were hardware, and I used stand alone recording equipment (cassette, Minidisk, CD-recorder and later a Korg D16) to get most of my music in finished form There were no problems with latency, few problems with software conflicts or plugin standards, and the instant gratification of just turning on an instrument and playing (without a substantial wait for the OS to boot up) was particularly appealing to me.

I admit I was intrigued by the prospect of a software synthesizer that was playable from my PC. I also remember reading a fairly positive review of Reason 1.0 in Electronic Musician and being interested in the concept of software that looked and behaved just like real mixers, effects processors, and synthesizers.

But, I was enjoying my hardware synths and didn't see a reason (no pun intended) to change...and wouldn't for another 6 years.

Though I'd loosely followed Reason's development through music mags and web sites since version 1.0, it wasn't until Reason 3 came out I decided to give it a shot. One of the bigger selling points was it was easy on the CPU, and I didn't feel like upgrading my PC at the time. Another factor was unlike Cakewalk's Sonar, Propellerhead wasn't releasing new versions EVERY year, with questionable improvements. Each upgrade had something substantial to offer and I was impressed with that. So, I bought it, installed it, and very quickly began to see the advantages of having an all-in-one software composing and recording solution. One click of "save" and EVERYthing about my recording session was collectively retained for easy call-up. All the synth module settings, the effects module routings and settings, the mixer settings, the midi sequences...EVERYthing wrapped in one nice little package. I had spent HOURS redoing my studio just to accommodate a new piece of equipment...redoing midi and audio cable routing, moving things around in the rack, swapping out keyboards. And with Reason, ALL of that effort could be saved and brought back with the click of a mouse button (or a control-S key combination!).

And then came Reason 4.0 where two of the more substantial changes for me came in the revamped, more powerful sequencer, and the new Thor Polysonic synthesizer. Thor let's you build sounds using analog modeling, wave-table, frequency modulation, and even phase distortion synthesis made population by the Casio CZ synths from the 80's. It's a GREAT complement to the already respectable selection of Reason synths.

Reasons to buy Reason:

- If you want to learn the basics of recording equipment (mixers, effects, mastering, synths, drum machines, etc), but don't want to spend $15 to $20k on the real, professional quality hardware to do so, this product is a very good way to learn first-hand how music/audio is processed, mixed, mastered, and recorded (of course, the way digital recording is exploding, pretty soon folks will mostly only know the virtual versions of all this equipment)

- Ideal tool for synth-based music composition

- Not so expensive when compared with just one medium quality hardware synth

- Low strain on the CPU

- VERY solid product (meaning it doesn't crash hardly at all) because Propellerhead has taken the time to thoroughly test it BEFORE releasing it and letting the users find all the bugs

- Comes with a great set of usable patches, samples, drum loop files

- Great way to learn synth programming

- EXTENSIVE user base online to help learn the ins and outs of the software

- Propellerhead has awesome customer support

Reasons NOT to buy Reason:

- You don't have a computer, or you have a very OLD computer

- You prefer recording real instruments that are REALLY played by people in real time

- You can't use third party plug-ins with it

- You can't easily record audio with it (unless you buy it with Reason's new "Record" software)

If you're new to recording and interested in creating your own music with synths, drum machines, and quality effects, for the price, this product is hard to beat. Even if you're a beginner, there's plenty you can do with just a little time invested. And that's the magic of Reason...despite a fairly simplistic approach and an ease for producing music, it flexibly lets the user build as simple or complicated a virtual studio as his/her imagination (and his/her computer) can handle.

"Wonderful and horrible" 2009-10-15

Well, Reason 4.0 is amazing, no argument there. The new synth allows for a much greater range of sounds than what was previously available, and the effects and processing are worth the price tag by themselves. That much is true, and has been covered.

Time for the downside.

WHAT, exactly, were the designers thinking when they mutilated the controls and layout? I'd like to know if this was someone's idea of "user friendly" or if that same someone just decided he hated the users entirely. If you started on 3.5 or earlier, here's some warning.

1. Enter doesn't snap the cursor to the beginning of the track. Keypad 0 does that now, which makes doing this more cumbersome.

2. When you switch to Edit Mode the displayed notes will not play until you un-shade the section they're in. It doesn't default to everything un-shaded and you can't turn this feature off.

3. Right clicking on a note in Edit Mode doesn't present the option of opening the Tool window. You have to open it via F8 or through the Edit Menu tab, and it stays open.

4. Transposing notes in the Tool Window can't be done by typing the number of steps you want to move them. Oh no. Now you have to click the up arrow that many times, or click the number field and drag it.

5. Every instrument you create now defaults to one of the presets. There's no "blank" option. What's that, you say? That's nothing to gripe about since you're going to change everything anyway? Well, User I Don't Know, try making a few Redrums. Now go to fill them with sounds. Yeah, it's kinda confusing with everything already filled with something else unless you do it all at once, eh? Oh, and when you go to open another sound, have fun watching every file path default to the location of the Reason Sound Bank, making you click through the file path your stuff is located in for each one.

6. Ok, I can't think of a 6 right now, but I'm not done with 5 either. It warrants another paragraph. See, point 5 -admittedly minor though it is relative to the other agonies I listed- also applies to the sampler. If you're trying to just load in a Wav file or something to pitch shift it around you have to individually delete every OTHER sound already loaded in. Sure, you can save that blanked out session as its own patch, but it's the principle of the thing.

None of these make the program prohibitively cumbersome, but they definitely break the flow when you're In The Zone and trying to get your ideas down without thinking about the controls. They all detract from smooth navigation, and they're all unnecessary. Version 3.5 was quite nearly perfect in that regard: almost identical to Pro Tools in the basics, to the point, and simple. Why on earth were these changed? A few changes here and there are fine, but if they're going to pull this crap couldn't they throw me a bone and provide the option of customizing? Or put a "classic" setting in?

If you're new to Reason, buy this and you'll never know. If you're not, the increased capability will seem almost Faustian.

This is "better" version from Manga Studio Debut 4. It has more features and is much more professional. Although the price is quite steep if you're serious about art and creating authentic looking manga this is the best tool. Even if its not for a manga, the built in patterns and different pens and brushes is worth the price. It's better than Photoshop because its not at all complicated to understand, but more complicated than Open Canvas, Corel Painter and SAI.

However if you can speak Japanese or is willing to wait for the English version - I recommend IllustStudio. From the same creators but with more tools and 3D imaging added. It's like SAI mixed with Photoshop and Poser. It's a lot less expensive BUT it is geared more towards regular artists rather than mangakas.

The only thing I am not crazy about with the Mac is the lack of clip art or royalty free pictures. So, I got Photo Objects.

While some are actually quite nice, the bulk of the photos are really not up to snuff. Pictures of cheesy statues, etc.

My biggest problem is it will not install correctly and keeps freezing up.

Get an on-line service if you really need the clip art.

Just to let you know, I think this is an expansion upon the 100,000 Hermera photo images collection for Mac. It has all the same artwork plus 50,000 more. The duplicate artwork is in higher resolution however, so that's a plus. You see I have the 100,000 collection as well, but I'm still glad I bought this one.

Some artwork on here is 1,000 x 1,000, so that's pretty big for casual use. I use it for website graphics so the "high-resolution" question for commercial printing isn't an issue for me.

The software is good, but it's a bit sluggish even on a fast mac. It seems like it's programed in an old language or something. It's not to slick but it gets the job done and is pretty easy to use.

The only thing I'm taking a star off for is that it's not really straight forward how to load all the DVD files onto your hard drive and access them from there rather than having to swap DVD's. At first it seems easy because there is a section in the application preferences for that very feature, but once you get into it you have to find out what folders to copy over, and how to link into those folders.

SIDE NOTE: It seems like most of the graphics in this collection are from England and from the early to mid-1990's. Like the pictures of cell phones are a sure give away. And you can just tell this stuff was photographed in Britain. Not a big deal but I'd thought I'd let you know.

This has the best variety of photo objects of all the disks I've seen and is the only one of it's kind for a mac. I would look closely before purchasing more that one disk of photo objects. Every photo object disk I've seen is put out by Hemera (check the fine print), which I believe is now represented by Jupiter images, a very large stock agency. Anyway, most of the photo objects you could purchase from any avenue, including their subscription service, is going to be on this disk, which makes it a very good value. My fiance purchased some smaller collections for the PC and all were duplicates.

The images are a little small for any kind of large scale print work, but will work fine for web or smaller print formats, like brochures & such. The images usually need to be descreened in Photoshop before placing, but the embedded alpha channel is still a huge time saver, considering the volume of shots.

The browser is easy to use, and you can just drag and drop files into applications or into a folder for later use (will be a tif with an alpha channel). This is good because you can't really bust open the proprietary format the image files are in without using the browser. There's a small converter for pc out there that does it if you're a pc user, but really, no one will ever need to have all these files converted at once, and dragging what you need out of the browser app does it instantly.

I've been using Quark XPress for 15 years and I wouldn't have a successful graphic design business without it.

These days, designers have a big choice to make between Quark and InDesign. Although I am certainly an Adobe fan and I use Photoshop and Illustrator extensively, Quark will always be my choice for page layout and publication design.

I have used InDesign for short periods of time and it is a great program. I found that most of the features I use in Quark are there if you look for them.

However Quark has been the industry leader in page layout for so many years. It is a very powerful program and worth the price. Quark has better abilities to manage larger and more complex documents than InDesign.

Quark is a program that can be used very simply (for a one page flyer) or for a 500 or more page document. Quark's strength is in its ability to manage document layout. The use of master pages and style sheets is critical to consistency and efficiency in managing a document. The search and replace features are invaluable if used properly. I did a directory job in 1/4 of the time of another designer by using something called Xpress tags and the search and replace feature that allows you to replace text with a style sheet.

I know that InDesign is touted for its ability to work with native Illustrator files and Photoshop PSD files. Quark 8 also allows for a ton of integration from a variety of other programs including drag and drop of native Illustrator, Photoshop, and Flash files.

Quark has a great website listing all the integration possibilities (and compares them to InDesign) [...] Obviously it will slant to Quark's advantage since it is their promotional materials.

Quark allows you to create for print or web and has anchors and hyperlinks.

For me, Quark is a typesetter's program since its ability to control type, kerning, tracking, scaling, etc. is very precise.

I also like the ease and variety of tools and the ability to do mathematical equations in the measurements box when positioning objects/items. In other words,if you want to but a tab at 1.25 and your next one exactly .375 from there, you can go to the position box where 1.25 is listed and just put: +.375 and Quark calculates it for you.

I really like the ability to set runarounds and clipping paths to objects thereby wrapping text around objects with a lot of control.

Quark occasionally has issues when working in tables (crashing) but there seems to be a fix listed online. There use to be issues with the drop shadows that Quark creates but I think that has been resolved as well.

I use Quark for Windows and have no issues using it on this platform.

Even after 15 years of use, there are many features I haven't learned to use yet. Not knowing these features does not stop me from using the program effectively, it just proves that Quark is very powerful and diverse.

If you are a MAC user or and InDesign fan, please don't write comments about how much better they are. I'm not trying to say that they are not good. It is just my opinion that I prefer to stay with Quark than to switch to InDesign.

Great product with some fantastic plugins and thankfully it works very similar to SX3 no great learning curve there...

However, Installing and getting it operational was a nightmare (installed on WinXP(64) the LCC software protection was shocking to install and kept crashing.

And I searched for DAYS on online forums to find info on the various errors that came up when it failed to install.

BIG RECOMMENDATION FOLKS... find ALL the necessary windows updates FIRST!!!

Esp the windows media updates.

Search the web by typing in the error code and DON'T GIVE UP.

Cubase5 is a great program and even better on a 64bit OS because of the extended memory use (in our case 8Gb)

There is No mastering suite in Cubase5... I'm still researching that.

The day before I ordered this Jam Pack, I had received an M-Audio 88es USB velocity sensitive keyboard from amazon (reviewed separately) Keystation 88es 88 Key USB MIDI Controller and sustain pedal M-Audio SP-2 US65010 Sustain Pedal Piano Style Sustain Pedal for Keyboards

The standard Garage Band 'Grand Piano' sounded just "OK", and there was no harpsichord. Those were my prime reasons for ordering this Jam Pack... and to have fun with the other sounds, of course.

The Steinway Piano in this pack is substantially better than the standard Garage Band piano. Neither is perfect - but this Steinway is great for the price. The difference is more than the soft hammer sound of a Steinway vs a hardened hammer sound of the standard piano. The velocity response and the behavior of sustained notes is much more realistic. The default settings have a fair amount of reverb - to simulate a concert hall. Adjusting that and other sliders can give a sound more appropriate to other settings.

It still does not sound like a real grand piano of course - there are no induced harmonics when the sustain pedal is depressed, for example. But, not bad at all.

The harpsichord is pretty disappointing in comparison. The lower register is amplified way louder than the upper - roughly everything below middle C as I recall. I haven't tried adjusting bass reduction effects etc to make it sound more 'correct'. Also, considerable reverb in the default 'Orchestra Harpsichord' to reflect a large hall. Lower that to get a chamber sound.

The variety of attack modes that are adjustable by keyboard control are pretty nice for instruments such as the strings and brass.

The huge quantity of loops (over 3 GB) will be of less use to me, but can be handy for making some quick transitions or tracks for videos - since Garage Band is basically THE sound editor for iMovie and Final Cut Express now. I had expected that the loops would be performances on real instruments, but many (most?) sound like sampled digital instruments to my ear.

If you want a better piano, a harpsichord and/or symphonic instruments, this pack is a great deal.

PS Not in the product description, so I just noticed: The Jam Pack comes with a selection of 'demo songs' reached from the File > Open Demos menu. (If shared, these reside on disk at Users > Shared > Symphony Orchestra Demo Songs.) Five symphonic themes as an orchestra of MIDI instruments and 8 loop (wave) compositions. Fun to mess with and good for learning purposes.

After taking the time to get serious with garage band, I quickly found the need to get more instument voices for my uses. I play the music into garage band (record) with a M-Audio 66ES keystation (which I highly recommend) and found that there just weren't enough instruments to meet my needs for all of the tracks that I like to record. This product more than meets those needs, as it has a ton of instruments to use. I especially like how much more realistic they sound than the pre-loaded instruments in the original garage band. If you are more into using the loops, they are spectacular! They would work well as soundtracks for movies or slideshows, or as accompaniments to anything you want. This product is well worth the money and I don't feel as if I need to get any of the other Jam Packs. But that's just me........

A releative of mine has gone to Kentucky and is going to bring it back for me but I probably won't get it until July. I look forward to receiving it as I have used Photoshop 2 on my old computer for the past 7 years and I have found it to be an excellent proramme to aid me in the art work I do. I unfortunately lost my C.D. of the programme and cannot therefore put it onto my new computer and I am lost without it.

I have Photoshop 5 which is excellent for my photographic work but not nearly as handy as Photoshop 2 for my other work.

I am so greatful that I could buy it from Amazon as I haven't been able to buy it from anywhere else, and as Amazon do not sell software to New Zealand it has taken me years to be able to access it. As it is a new copy I am sure it will be excellent but I will let you know when I get it if I have any problems.

Before buying Sibelius One I downloaded a trial version as well as a trial version of Finale Print Music and used both to work on producing a score for a piece of music for solo piano that I had composed and which was in MIDI form. Sibelius was the clear winner, it had a more pleasing user interface and I was able to figure out how to do everything I needed to do either by reading the manual or by searching the Web. I have not noticed any essential features that are lacking from Sibelius One, so far I have been able to do everything I need to produce a professional looking score which can I have already posted on the sibeliusmusic web site.

I too am among the many (sadly) who purchased the program. I agree with all the previous comments about shortfalls. I too had a problem with registration, but you would think adding a short note explaining the registration procedure with my order confirmation would save time and frustration. I have used several superior PC based architect programs and know quite a lot about design. This program is primitive, unintuitive and slow. The roof defaults to a set height, not connecting to walls. Adjustments to height had to be made with all objects. The "object" library is limited and until you experiment several hours; hard to use. Rotating object is difficult and inside details are lacking. Selecting or changing material coverings/looks is challenging. The manual is of minimal help as well. $30 isn't a lot to spend, but it is a good deal to waste. If you own an Macintosh, consider using a PC based program first. Sorry, but since they aren't any I can find, Mac users are left out in the cold.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, my disc was not blank (I didn't read the reviews first), but it didn't help much because the first step before you can use the product is to register it, using the license code.

Unfortunately, there is no license code anywhere to be found. Not on the box, not on the disc, nor on the website.

There is no customer support to ask.

Hence, the product is totally unusable. Thirty bucks down the toilet.

[Edit February 10th]: Okay, in all fairness I did manage to get the program to load and run today. Let me explain how, in case anybody else comes up against this. The fine print in the installation instructions indicates that you have to provide an "organization" name, even if you're just a private individual. If you fail to do so, your registration will fail at the very end, without any explanation as to why. The only opportunity you get to enter an organization comes at the very beginning of the registration process, and it is not marked as mandatory at that point -- but it is.

Once I entered a fictitious organization, and typed in the 9-character code on the box (which is not labeled as a "license code" and hadn't worked before so I assumed it wasn't), my registration finally went through. Geez, would it have killed them to make this the least bit obvious?!?

After all that, I've been playing with the program and have managed to make it work, after a fashion. It took me a couple hours to find the "objects" (furniture, fixtures and appliances shown on the box), but they ARE in fact included (hidden under the "library" option). The software is pretty basic and it's buggy and it renders kind of slow, but I guess I have to retract my earlier statement that it's "totally unusable." It has some very odd limitations -- you can create gables on your roof but you can't cut out the roof beneath them or add sides, ceilings are merely the underside of your roof, table lamps by default are added at floor level, there's only one style of door and window, and so forth -- but I've had the same exact complaints with Punch software for 10 years. They're not going to fix anything.

Would I buy it again? Probably not. The product could be completely transformed with 5 minutes of better instructions, but it's still a dog in pajamas.

Over the last several years I have used 3D Home Architect to design offices and homes. The version being reviewed has deteriorated significantly from prior versions in functionality and features. It seems the company buys a new version of the software from 3rd parties and calls it "3D Home Architect" resulting in absolutely no file compatibility with prior versions. I'm pretty disappointed with the current version and would not have purchased it if I had known how bad the product is. Don't waste your money!

"LOVE IT!" 2009-12-16

This program was recommended to us by our kids' piano teacher. Both of my girls (ages 4 & 5 1/2) take private piano lessons and their teacher suggested getting this program to supplement their lessons (it works out perfectly while one is in her lesson, I work on my laptop with the other one on the program. Each lesson takes about 1/2 an hour).

The lessons are clear and easy to understand. The only draw back is the choices in quizes are not vocalized, just written (the lessons are vocalized as well as written) so for little ones you would need to assist them. Then 4 radio buttons will be listed below with the answer choices - advance reading is necessary at this point because they put words that are similar. But other than that, my kids work on it independently until something like that appears. The games are a little intense, but the kids enjoy them.

All in all it's a great program! I would have given 5 stars had it not been for the choices not vocalized.

This really is a great tool. It's a great way for students to focus on concepts through interactive lessons and games. I'm using it as additional training for my students. They all really seem to like it. The theme is geared toward younger students though beginners at any age would benefit from using this. Caution - This software does not run on the 64-bit version Windows Vista. It runs fine on XP. I haven't tried it on 32-bit Vista yet, but I'm assuming the Vista seal only applies to the 32-bit edition.

I love using this program with a midi keyboard as well. I tried using it without the keyboard and I did not find the practice games as challenging or as real as playing the piano. Using the music ace program without a midi keyboard is like learning to type using an on screen keyboard with only a mouse. I have the 49e keyboard (sold separately).

I can't preview the movie on my MAC using Popcorn and when I download it direct to the PSP it shows as a corrupted file. I've converted hundreds of movies successfully with another program on my PC but took my new loaded MAC overseas instead and purchased the Roxio product before leaving. Buy something else.

I had read several favorable reviews for some parts of this package (most notably from Ctein who I think walks on water). Yet the price really gave me pause. Also the learning curve. Nevertheless I finally bit the bullet. I slowly climbed the learning curve with a lot of help from Nik's excellent and free tutorials. (Did you hear that Adobe Photoshop? FREE TUTORIALS!)

I am glad that I did. Now I have more selective control over tonality, brightness, hue, etc. etc. than I ever dreamed was possible. I make subtle enhancements that never occurred to me before. Now I don't know how I would get along without this package.

Oh yes. Integration with Aperture is seamless and the the two complement each other. With Snow Leopard everything runs blazingly fast.

Simple tasks such as inserting a note in the middle of a melody, changing a time signature or even changing the title of a composition are either not possible or are not easy. The help materials, most of which do not come with the product, spend as much time vaunting the product as in providing useful information. And, to top it off, technical support seems largely unavailable -- e-mails not answered, telephone not answered. My piano teacher suggested that I should have bought Finale.

I've been using Photoshop for a decade and have only recently decoded to upgrade to the creative suite. Reason? No other graphics software has been as useful, dependable and trouble free as Photoshop.

Is Adobe greedy and rapacious? Yes, but their software kicks ass. Are they spying online like Big Brother to protect their license? Yes, but welcome to the 21st century. Could they release a multi platform edition of their software? Certainly, but these programs are so deep, and so broad, that it would cost them time and money to do it, and cost them sales on the other end. How many businesses do you know that are willing to spend money to lose money? If you really want something to complain about, buy practically anything from Microsoft. Probably no corporation in America deserves more than 3 stars. Even Apple would rather blame their customers for exploding batteries than just replace them. I had to threaten to put mine on YouTube before they would replace it.

The Creative Suite disc demo cost me less than $20 with shipping, but Adobe didn't tell me that some functions would be disabled. The first week the demo allowed me to log on day by day and use the 30 day trial on non contiguous days. After that, Bridge began starting up on its own, eating my demo days when I wasn't using them. When I called to get a serial # I was told they would ship new packaging and I would have to wait 3 shipping days. Customer service suggested I buy the serial # online, but that it wouldn't arrive until the next day after my credit card was verified. Is it my imagination, or have credit card purchase verifications sped up since the 70's? But no matter; the pertinent window on their site wouldn't open in the 15 minutes I waited, despite my DSL service. Ironic, considering the intuitive efficiency of their software.

That's why I'm here! Thank you Amazon!!!

"Great product. HORRIBLE upgrade policy" 2009-02-28

This 1 star is more about Adobe's upgrade policy than it is Dreamweaver itself and a warning to all potential buyers. I have spent thousands of dollars on Adobe products over the years, purchased several versions of Dreamweaver before it was owned by Adobe, later upgraded to the Creative Suite and have CS3 Web Premium. I decided that Dreamweaver was the only app that I use enough to justify upgrading to CS4 and purchased this product. Seeing that I have had (and paid for) Dreamweaver for years and owned CS3 Suite, it did not seem like an issue.... think again. If you have the suite, you MUST upgrade to another suite, you can't pay them MORE PER ITEM, just to upgrade a single item in the suite. I called and spoke to several people at Adobe and they agreed. As a result, I was stuck with an upgrade that will not even upgrade on my system. F- on the upgrade policy and customer service for this.

On to the product itself... (I did end up getting a copy that would upgrade on my system - so I guess they got my money anyway)

This is a must have upgrade of Dreamweaver for anyone who uses it on a daily basis. It is much faster than the previous version, has a better interface for the program, and many improved features.

I am continually impressed by what the engineers at Apple can do. This software is great for musicians that want to be inspired by using the software - not feel as if they need another degree just to grasp things. I've tried, and unfortunately wasted a bit of time and money on some other music making programs, but I'm sure glad that I gave Logic 8 a try. Right out of the box and thanks to some fellows posting videos on the web, I was able to make just enough music to make me smile before hitting the ops manual like I should. Let me tell you, Ultrabeat alone is worth the price of admission if you're a percussionist like myself. Excellent product - thanks Apple!

I don't see a need to provide an additional review of Logic Express since most folks here have covered it nicely and it already has an excellent reputation and following. Logic is simply the best product in its field and Express is only limited in the amount of loops and filters (a few other minor differences but truly minor). I would comment on the distributor but it appears that they change (didn't realize that-mine was DBROTH and they were excellent).

One thing that I think you might like to know is that in spite of a couple of comments here there is no printed manual with the product. This is not due to this being a different bundle for from what I gather the retail version of the product does not contain a printed manual either. The pdf is indeed large (1055 pages) but well written. Anyway, just thought I'd pass that along since I was expecting a written manual from what someone said previously here.

They need to update the software. Old tech, to get full screen you need to mess with desktop settings etc... It's very obvious they have not given this software any serious attention after it was released. That said it does what it's supposed to.

Ignore the single star folks; don't know what they are talking about. It doesn't matter what the songs are when you are learning to play the piano. It's all about practice so YOU THAT YOU CAN GO PLAY WHATEVER YOU WANT. If you can already read music and play the keyboard, buy the intermediate course. It's very well done, but it's all classical music.

For me, I'm self taught and play by ear. I bought this so I can get real feedback while I'm playing. So if playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Row Row Your Boat gets me there I have no problem with it. It still challenges me to read the music and master left, right hand.

I use Garageband to help develop my guitar skills and I thought that the loops that came with GarageBand were lacking in the drums department. This JamPack has a good selection of drum loops that work great for playing along with or for piecing together an original songs. After installing the JamPack, I now have 1236 drum loops of which about one third are for soft instrument drum kits and the other two thirds are actual recorded sound. I am pleased with the variety of the loops and fact that there are some fills.

I used an entry level drum machine for a while, but it was difficult to set up with the provided beats and even more difficult to program original beats. The drum machine costs twice as much as the JamPack. The loops and fills provided with this JamPack are way easier to set up for a song and the midi data can be edited to create new beats.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the product. If it were less expensive it would probably get five stars. (I have not fully explored the bass loops because I record my own bass tracks, so I have no comment on that aspect.)

This JamPack was easy to install - when I opened the program afterwards it was as if all of the new loops and instruments were always there. This JamPack is a great foundation for anybody looking to learn the basics of the program... great drum kits and some incredible bass sounds.

This software is amazing, and so much fun for the money!! I particularly like the defog and colored enhancing filters, but there is no limit to how creative you can be with so many choices. There is only one drawback (and why I didn't give it 5 stars): after applying a filter and saving, a lot of the meta data is lost. I emailed Tiffen about this, along with some sample photos. After checking it out, they said there was a bug in the EXIF that will be fixed in the next version. So beware, you will lose some meta data. I am still happy with my purchase, and use this software often as part of my workflow.

"This Is The One!" 2009-10-21

After about two years of poking around in Finale (most of that time spent looking at the considerable tool bar and going WTF), I started hearing about this Sibelius in numerous musician forums. I went to their website, downloaded the trial version, and was like "Where have you been all this time?" What grabbed me right off the bat was the comparative ease of using the numeric keypad to enter note values and accidentals, compared to Finale's eye-boggling buttons. Entering notes by mouse (or in my case, pen tablet) is a cinch thanks to the "preview notes" that appear under your cursor as you position them, and you can use regular keys A-G just as easily; top row numeric keys add instant intervals, arrow keys bump notes up and down in case you slipped, and of course you get audio reference for each note entered. Adding "lines" for slurs and crescendo/decrescendos, text for dynamic changes that affect playback, copying, pasting and adding staves, resizing bars to avoid collisions, and I'm sure many other actions I have yet to discover are all so intuitive and sensibly laid out that anyone with a marginal knowledge of notation can get working and be productive in very short order.

At this point I should mention: I've been an ear musician all my life, am just now getting around to using traditional notation, and Sibelius has made the process so accommodating I'm amazed at how quickly I've been cranking out projects in my first month of using it. One function I'm looking forward to conquering is the ability to scan in already printed music. This package includes a standalone app that scans and saves music pages as a PDF, and uses optical character recognition to convert it to note info that Sibelius can use. It's not a perfect science, some tweaking and cleaning up required (kind of like using Adobe Illustrator's AutoTrace), but if you're transcribing, say, piano music for expanded instrumental arrangement it can save you a lot of time in manual entry. Oh yes, and there's always Explode for separating chords into individual parts, and Implode for going the other way. Essentially we're talking one person doing the work of about 3-5... or, rather, the software doing it.

Another exciting feature (the deal breaker as far as Finale is concerned) is the utilization of ReWire, which can be used to slave apps like Logic or Reason (both of which I use); this integration takes production of your music to the next level. Even if you don't have any of those apps, Sibelius ships with six pages worth of sampled instruments (no time here to count each instrument, so I'm going by the reference manual) courtesy of Garritan Personal Orchestra and Big Band which, depending on your Mac/PC's processor/memory capacity, will color your music with all the richness you can imagine.

All this before you even get to printing and handing out copies to your musicians. As you add parts to your master score, Sibelius creates docs in the background for each individual instrument, giving you an instant copyist's assistant. On the production end, there is a mixer window you can use to fine tune the volume and overall sound of each and all "players". Something that may prove very useful, though I haven't tried it yet, is a module you can use to go online and publish and share your work should you choose to go the networking route. For those times when inspiration is hard to come by, there is an ideas library of motifs you can add to for later use. And the list goes on.

I couldn't recommend Sibelius enough for notation-oriented music hobbyists and professionals who want to get up and running quickly and easily. Again, I am moving from purely playing by ear to being more musically "literate", and thanks to this package, moving quickly enough that what I've come up with so far is very gratifying and exciting. I expect to be a lot more productive in the near future.

I absolutely love this program. The audio portions are quite clear and understandable. This program would work for anyone from someone with no knowledge of Spanish to someone who just wanted to brush up on specific skills. I especially like the downloadable flash cards. These come in handy for those times when accessing the computer is not possible. Great program - 5 out of 5 stars.

"Rebate Mischief by this vendor" 2009-12-21

Before you purchase this product you should be aware that Nova Development has an extremely unethical approach to processing the rebates they offer so prominently to move their product. For example, the address on the rebate form that you download from the Amazon site is located in Calabasas, CA. This is an old address for Nova Development. The Company has not provided the post office with a forwarding address, which causes any rebate submissions mailed to the Calabasas address to be returned to you as undeliverable by the USPS. This fact has been brought to the attention of Company representatives by many customers and the vendor has done nothing to correct this problem. Get the picture? Nova Development will place as many hurdles in front of you as possible to scam you out of your paltry $10 rebate. We as customers have a duty to refuse to do business with unethical companies like Nova Development.

The best thing about this software package is that it goes with you wherever you go! My husband can use the MP3 files on his player while he travels outside the country, and my 7-month-old daughter listens to the CD's with me in the car, absorbing Spanish as we run errands together. I have never seen a software program that comes with so many varied options. My favorite section in the computer learning system would have to be the movie theater. Having taken Spanish in college, I watched or listened to many dialogues, frequently finding myself at a loss over certain portions of the conversation. Immersion is great, but when the dots are never connected, it doesn't do anyone any good. With Berlitz, the Spanish is written out, so I can follow along if I am not hearly portions correctly, and if I need a quick translation check, the English is there too! It could perhaps become a crutch for some users, having it all spelled out there, but I found it to be extremely helpful. I also appreciated the wide variety of other activities, like the crossword puzzle or the flashcards, fill-in-the-blanks and re-arranging sentences, etc. For someone like me who tends to forget vocabulary easily, it's nice to have ways to reinforce what I'm learning instead of having to simply repeat the same activity 40 gazillion times. The interface is easy to use and enjoyable. I would not term this program as truly "immersion learning," as there are many word-for-word translations used or available, but there is enough of that element to make the learning effective. My only confusion came when I opened the first screen and was able to choose between two types of learning: conversation and reading. The division seemed unnecessary and perhaps arbitrary. The biggest plus for Berlitz is the meticulous review, review, review. I don't think I'll ever forget what I learned!

Berlitz Spanish Premier is fast and easy way to learn Spanish. My favorite part about the program is that there is 3 ways to learn Spanish - on your PC, on your MP3 player, or in your car. How convenient! It's nice to be able to work on my PC so I can visually see everything and then listen to lessons on my MP3 player when I'm on my way to school or work. It really helps emphasize what I've learned on my PC!

Another feature that I enjoy is the speech analysis. This helps improve your pronunciation of words by analyzing how you speak. I really think that this feature is one reason that makes this program so successful. If you're learning Spanish from a book, you may be pronouncing everything incorrectly. The speech analysis feature really helps make you sound natural.

This program isn't just another boring way to learn something on a PC - it's interactive and fun through every lesson.

Now, as a disclaimer I have had previous Spanish language experience from taking it in high school and a few semesters in college. But all of this was from years ago and I did remember some things, but not much. I still think that this software is effective in teaching the Spanish language.

I've owned the past versions of Adobe's Creative Suite and will say that I am in love with this product. I originally purchased it for my Windows, but found that the Mac version works much better and was practically made for my iMac (my Windows version is currently for sale, if interested.) I mainly use the Master Collection for inDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator and am constantly amazed. Hopefully, Adobe won't release a fifth version any time soon, but if they do I will definitely be looking forward to it!!

I'm not a professional photographer but photography is a passion of mine. I literally have thousands of pictures on our computer. After working with them in a photo workshop program, I place them in special folders to keep them organized. I've been told by many, and I agree, that I should have pursued a career in this field....but, then again, maybe it's more enjoyable left as a hobby. All this said....I totally adore the "SMILEBOX" I ordered from AMAZON. I've already created many photo productions and have sent them to numerous people. They're all amazed at the program and what it has to offer. Let me warn you....It's addicting! The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating is because of a couple of areas I'm sure Smilebox will eventually make better. One of these is that some applications will not allow for your whole picture to fit in a frame. It cuts it in half. But, a lot of the applications accept the whole picture. The other problem I've had is loading up all my contacts into the "email addresses" field. Still, the "SMILEBOX" program with all it's creativity is awesome and I would highly recommend it.

"Best solution for non-professional AVCHD editing on Macs" 2009-06-16

This is easily the best solution for non-professional video editing on a Mac. It's much more flexible (and in my experience, much quicker to work with once you've gotten used to it) than iMovie, and not nearly as expensive as Final Cut Studio. In my opinion Apple has created a very nice balance between versatility and cost with this exceptional piece of software. I'm very happy with it and it has everything I need (at least for now).

I upgraded from FCE 2.0 (I also have FCP 5) and so I don't really miss the Livetype and Soundtrack content that others are complaining is missing in this set. As far as I can tell, FCE 4 has all I'll ever need until I make the leap to Final Cut Studio. I am very impressed by the ease with which FCE 4 will capture AVCHD video content and by the fact that Final Cut Express allows me to take all of the footage I've captured in other formats (DV, HDV, H.264) with various camcorders and place it all on the same timeline. I had Final Cut Pro 5 and it wouldn't allow me to do that - I would have had to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. What I've realized in playing around with FCE 4 is that it has all the functions that I ever did in fact use from Final Cut Pro 5, so I've been very happy with it and it will allow me to finish work on a small documentary project that I'd put off because it was such a pain to manage the different file formats in FCP 5.

I had just bought a new Sony AVCHD Camcorder for a ministry function, and when I got home, I realized that FCE 3.5 HD didn't mean that it would convert AVCHD video - I had to upgrade! Luckily Amazon had the upgrade CD's still so I ordered it for a reasonable amount and when it came (on time, of course!) it worked pretty well! It's not perfect- the 4.0 software is a down-grade in some ways, not including soundtrack and other features that were available in 3.5 (software companies are too lazy to add past features into new products). It does handle AVCHD very well, and that' really what mattered so far. I would recommend it to anyone familiar with FCE and needs to handle the newest video standards. I still haven't gotten down-and-dirty on it (not enough time) but for now, it deserves the 4 star rating. If thinks worked much easier, if the workflow was easier, adding filters, effects, titles was easier, etc., then I'd give FCE a 5-Star rating. My Adobe Premiere 6.0 is still easier to produce with than FCE.

"Awesome for the price!" 2008-01-09

I also own Final Cut Pro 5.1, but since I had Final Cut Express 3.0, I thought I'd spring for an upgrade.

I'm most pleased with this--so far it's very stable, I love its new filters, and the features it has are almost equal to Final Cut Pro in all the important features that prosumers are most likely to use. For most prosumers, it has everything we need. I am continually amazed with how much you get with Final Cut Express.

Because I had Final Cut Express 3.0, I was able to load up the media from that version of LiveType and make it work with the version of LiveType that shipped with FCE 4. I never used Soundtrack that much, so I can't say I miss it, but if I needed it, I could always use the version that came with version 3.

Like many other Mac users, I was a little surprised when I saw that LiveType shipped with less media, and Soundtrack was no longer included (apparently the audio capabilities are now available in Final Cut Express 4, as well as Garageband). But, in all fairness, I had to consider that the cost was $100 less than the previous version which had Soundtrack and the extra LiveType media. After thinking about it a while, I think I am glad that Apple took this route--a $200 pricetag makes Final Cut Express very tempting for many more Mac users than before, as well as making many Windows users envious! (Where is their $200 prosumer video application with equivalent features and reliability?)

I've done a lot of research, and so far I'm not finding anything on the Windows side that offers as much as Final Cut Express, for a similar price. I'm not knocking the many affordable $100 programs that Windows users have, because for many people that's more than enough and there are many wonderful choices available. But from what I've seen, each one of them lack some capability that I have come to enjoy or rely on in Final Cut Express. (But of course they are less expensive, so this is to be expected.) There seems to be no "middle ground" for video enthusiasts on the Windows side (either it's an affordable $100 program with crippled features, or a pro-level app with a pricetag to match).

A big thumbs up for this upgrade to Final Cut Express! I am happier than ever to have switched to Macintosh!

Well this pgrade is really great if you have upgraded to FCE 3.5 already. However if you are upgrading from an older version watch out. FCE 4 comes with only 500mb of live type content. FCE 3.5 came with 10GB. If livetype isn't a priority for your video production then go for it. But if you are looking for an upgrade for your FCE from 3 or lower and your live type 1 and want all the latest live type content this upgrade is not for you. Buy the livetype 3.5 or buy both 4 & 3.5 while you can.

The iLife 08 box arrived incredibly fast, but my poor G4 PowerBook works so hard to make it worthwhile. I can't use the iMovie update, and iWeb and especially iDVD push the G4 into running quite slowly. But they produce the results I really needed, and the installation went like clockwork. The demo of iWork that came with it finally convinced me to change back to the Apple office utilities package, which I had left for Office 2004 (which was given to me for free).

I was planning to purchase iLife '09. Why not? It's the most current version, right? But in my research I found out that iLife '09 does not work fully with non-Intel-based Macs. And, of course, I don't have an Intel-based Mac. There are many warnings on blogs and other sites about iMovie not working properly with iLife '09 unless you have an Intel Mac. Definitely something for you to look into before you decide whether to purchase '08 or '09. Hope this warning helps you make an informed decision. If you're not planning to use iMovie, then you could probably go right to '09. But if that's something you're looking forward to using, do a little more research and maybe think about getting '08. Good luck!

This is the last piece of software that will still work on the G4 Powerbook line of MacIntosh computers effectively. It is a big upgrade from the previous versions and well worth the money, but it does cause older computers to run a bit slower. Still, I recommend either doing it now or buy the new Intel powerbook as you have no real cost effective options. Having tried it I really am glad I made the upgrade rather than buy a whole new computer.

This software comes with a combination of barriers which you have to use in order to install it. They use an intermediary service to handle registration. I first installed the trial software, then purchased the product before my trial period expired. This became another nightmare because every time I used the product I was reminded that I had x number of days until the trial expired. I purchased the software and installed it without first uninstalling the original. The few times I used the product it crashed my MacPro. I have finally decided to accept the fact that I threw money out the door because I am not about to waste time with their invisible licensing barrier that they put between you and OnOne.

If you have to blowup images from time to time Genuine Fractals 6 is the best way I have found to do it yet! While it isn't the cheapest plugin around it is definitely worth the price. It allows you to bundle enlargements into batches and do them all at once or you can do them one at time as you need to enlarge an image. It works far better than the built in enlargement in photoshop.

Genuine Fractals also includes easy to understand video tutorials the installer directs you to once the plugin is installed on your computer. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Does the product support enlargement of raw files ... yes. Are the enlargements any better than results obtained with bicubic renderings ... that hard to determine. There were times when bicubic rendering were better, despite efforts to optimize pixel patterns with GF. And GF takes forever to compute a model even when using a quadcore processor with 4GB memory under the Win2003 server platform. I'd suggest photoshop users max the abilities built into the software, before shelling out $100 or so for a software tool that does so little. [Footnote: I object the Amazon label of a "Kid's Review" in so much as I'm the one stuck showing my parent's how to use their computer to prepare the taxes].

I have really enjoyed this plug in for Photoshop

Things to note

1. This works with Photoshop Element 6 &7 (may work with older versions but this is what I know works for my experience)

2. It does not work with the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4. OnOne's web site states they are working on this issue.

I have found this product allows me to control precisely size and pixels/inch. I can easily enlarge small or cropped images to a dpi needed for the particular printer I am using (I typically use Epson to print photos and 360dpi has been recommended).

I can enlarge photos without adding a bunch of digital noise and maintaining sharpness. I've only pushed to enlarge 200-300% though I know they say you can enlarge beyond that.

OnOne's web site has a lot of great info and some free plug-in. I highly recomend checking it out.

I bought this as part of OnOne's 4.5 suite of tools. It was well worth the investment.

I am glad that I upgraded - there are several great new features in CS4 like when you're placing an image in InDesign, it shows in the list if you've color coded a folder which CS3 did not do. Illustrator it's cool to add more pages/artboards though it takes a bit of time to figure it out. Not sure I really noticed any big difference in Photoshop but maybe I need to play more.

Considering Adobe has worked their way into being the industry standard, it's a good thing that these apps are very useful for my design and illustration business. I mainly use Illustrator and Photoshop. I was one of the last hold-outs with the competitor of Illustrator - Macromedia Freehand. I found Freehand to be much faster, "lighter" and less bloated. When Adobe bought Macromedia I knew it was over for Freehand. I tried for years to make the switch but found Illustrator lacking in the tools I used for my illustration work. CS4 was the version I was finally able to use to make the conversion. They even offer an option called "Like Freehand" that mimics the old Freehand interface. I find the new "Blob Tool" very useful and I like the improved gradient tools.

However, I have found Adobe's customer service to be abhorrent. I have been using Adobe products since the early 1990's. I have not had to use their customer service in years, but when I recently had a problem, it was probably one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. I have read where they are working on this. I hope so, because for what they charge for their products, customer service should be excellent.

Overall, considering there is very little competition, Adobe CS4 contains very good (although somewhat "bloated") applications. Just hope you never have to call customer service.

I love CS4. What I hate is that you have to read the whole listing to see that THIS IS ONLY AN UPGRADE FROM CS3 TO CS4, not any other versions. So I spent hours preparing for this transition, hours upon hours, and when I called Adobe support they said "Oh, yeah, this is a really common problem. There's really no way to tell the CS3-CS4 from the CS2-CS4 upgrades, and they cost the same price. We could help you, but you didn't buy it from us..." Aargh! So I'm returning it, Amazon won't make any money, I have to explain to my office that they're stuck on CS2 for a while, and there's just no way my boss will believe this isn't something completely negligent on my part.

I've been a Microsoft Visio user for years on the Windows platform. When I switched to using the Mac as my primary platform at home, I wanted some kind of solution for creating diagrams such as web site maps, system development flowcharts and so on.

My first solution was to run Visio for Windows under Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac. However, the performance running in a virtual environment never really impressed me. I've got a Mac mini with a 2Ghz Intel Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM, but even that wasn't enough to provide a satisfying experience under Parallels.

My next stop was Crossover for Mac, which allowed me to run Visio 2003 on the Mac and associate Visio files to run Visio in a Windows-like setting. This has been an acceptable solution performance-wise; but when it comes to editing files and integrating well with my external hard drives attached to the Mac mini, I really didn't feel it was a seamless experience.

After searching, I gave OmniGraffle 5 Pro a whirl. I've just completed a few site map design projects using OmniGraffle. On the second project, I had to exchange data with Visio, as OmniGraffle is not available for Windows and my Windows-installed laptop left me only the option of using Visio. The VDX (Visio XML Drawing) format allowed me to exchange data between OmniGraffle and Visio without too many glaring issues. There were some formatting problems when I read the VDX file exported from OmniGraffle into Visio (carriage returns and tabs ended up as garbage characters, and a few text boxes were out of place), but I was pleasantly surprised that the export process to VDX from OmniGraffle and then back into OmniGraffle when I came home went as smoothly as it did.

There are a few other thing that Visio users will need to remember when switching to OmniGraffle, such as the need to hit ENTER when adding text to a shape rather than just selecting and typing it as Visio allows, or the different keyboard shortcuts available in OmniGraffle, such as Z for zoom, 1 to switch to the selection cursor and so on. However, I found that after a brief period of adjustment, I was more productive in OmniGraffle.

Also, I found that the buttons and options are there where you expect and need them, and the overall feel of the application is very ergonomic and well-thought-out. (The text options in particular throw you for a loop first - clicking the text icon on the text style palette opens up the fonts palette, which provides more options... this could be consolidated a lot better!)

Although I'm not a big fan of all the floating palettes (which tend to clutter the screen and obscure the document you're working on, if you don't periodically minimize or close the ones you don't need), the combination of Illustrator-like keyboard shortcut options and the easy text input feature for shapes makes OmniGraffle a winner for any flowcharting, mind-mapping or general diagramming option.

Overall, I feel that although I have yet to really explore the options available in OmniGraffle, it has served my needs very well so far. With a little more attention to the usability of the floating palettes, and a bit more detail in the help screens, the application could be improved... but my feeling so far is that OmniGraffle is a very user-friendly, extremely versatile application that will provide a very satisfying experience that beats Illustrator hands-down for people who need to create diagrams and charts of all types on the Mac... and even for those who need a high degree of compatibility with Visio for Windows. I'm sticking with OmniGraffle. And if I had to make a choice between OmniGraffle and Visio, at this point I'd certainly choose OmniGraffle.

"Great Visio substitute" 2009-01-01

I am a patent agent and prepare my own figures for patent applications. I draw network diagrams, flow charts, GUIs, circuitry, and random computer parts. I recently made the switch to Mac. I tried running Visio through Parallels, but got tired of waiting for Parallels to boot up before I could edit or view a drawing. I decided I'd try to find a Mac-native application for drawings. When I did a search for Visio for Mac, I found out that it's not available, but that there's a product called ConceptDraw that sells a replacement package for $200. I found them when I Googled "Visio Mac" and was directed to visioformac.com. I guess I was somewhat displeased with a company trying to give me the impression that they are the official replacement for Visio in the Mac environment. With all fairness to ConceptDraw, I did not try their product out as a result, so I cannot provide any commentary on the quality of that product. I went to see what else was around. After hunting around, I found NeoOffice. While it's somewhat feature-rich, it had a lag issue, I assume because it's Java-based. My attention then was directed to OmniGraffle, which appeared to be ConceptDraw's only other strong commercial competitor. Omnigraffle was appealing because they had a regular version that cost $100. Then, I watched Omnigraffle's intro videos. They showed off Omnigraffle's great, clean UI and how easy it would be for me to do what I had been doing in Visio. Those videos pretty much sold me. When I looked at the webpage that provided a feature comparison between the regular and pro version of Omnigraffle, I discovered that I could import all my previous work from Visio. That alone saved me a ton of time. I purchased the Omnigraffle Professional 5 and have not regretted it for a second. The selection of stencils on graffletopia.com made getting started a breeze. I quickly imported my Visio stencils without issue and imported various drawings I had prepared in Visio with no hiccups. My only gripe is that I wish that Omnigraffle had a PC version that I could tell Windows users to use because, in my opinion, this software is better than Visio for my purpose.

"Excellent Solution for Site-maps and more..." 2008-11-02

"This review mostly of Iphoto, which could be better" 2008-11-10

The main programs I use are Iphoto and Itunes. Since Itunes is free (and if you have an Ipod, you have no choice), I'll concern myself with Iphoto and not rate the other programs in the suite. I have not upgraded to Ilife 08, nor do I have any plans to.

Although Iphoto is not free, a lot of programs rely on it (such as ComicLife) so not using Iphoto is almost not a choice.

First of all, if you have a substantial photo collection (mine is over 40,000 images), you need to have memory. I found that Iphoto was very slow until I put 2gb into my Mac Mini (which is the most mine will take). Now it's just a little slow. Second, Iphoto is VERY picky about your photo collection. Once you've "imported" your photos, Iphoto doesn't like you to touch them, except in Iphoto. Although Iphoto allows you to keep originals outside the Iphoto library, this makes the library extremely fragile and prevents some features from working properly because Iphoto simply stores each photo as a symbolic link to the original. When you "export" your photos to a CD, you get a CD full of useless symbolic links. I keep my entire library on an external drive. This keeps the library together, and everything works (and - I can back up the entire library). There is no obvious provision for doing something to a photo outside of Iphoto (for example, if the "photo" is actually exported from a graphics program, or "printed" from a document). Unlike Itunes (which is a master of background processing), Iphoto forces you to sit through tedious "progress" screens whenever you do anything time-consuming (which is most batch operations). If you (for example) create a movie from a slideshow, you cannot do anything else in Iphoto except watch the progress bar. Even duplicating a photo takes a little while. Iphoto gives you albums, smart albums (albums based on some selection criteria), and folders (and folders of folders) to organize your photos, however it does not let you create an album in a folder (you have to create it and drag it into the folder) and does not provide the option of sorting albums within a folder (you get to do this manually - a real pain). Although you can have more than one Iphoto library, you cannot have more than one open at once, or easily copy between them (there are external programs which do this, but these simply issue Iphoto commands, so you get to sit through the whole tedious process, and these sometimes lose information like album comments).

Once you get used to Iphoto's many quirks, it's a great program. I've never been able to access all of my photos so easily. The thumbnail views are resizable (so you can have tiny to quite large thumbnails, depending on what you are looking for) and the full screen view gives you some limited (but usually sufficient) editing options. The slideshows (using the Ken Burns moving picture effect) are beautiful, and one can export these to Quicktime movies for making DVDs (this is a better choice than creating the slideshow in Idvd, unless you like tiny pictures). One can also create books, calendars, order prints, and there are plug-ins for exporting to various photo sites (such as Picassa). One can also create emails with photos (which is a great feature - it's the only way to create an editable document containing a set of photos sized for printing), export photos (in various sizes) and create very bare-bones web albums (without exporting to iweb).

I'd give Iphoto more stars if it made organization easier (create album in folder, keep folder sorted, smart folders of albums), was less dependent on drag/drop (tedious with huge lists of albums), worked better with other graphics programs (having to duplicate a photo first to create a variant of it is a real pain, and not automatically refreshing thumbnails makes working with native Photoshop originals exported as JPGs a real pain), and was better at background tasks.

one note about the other programs in the suite..

Itunes - one of my favorites. I'm running the latest and it keeps getting better (I gave Iphoto less stars, since I know that Apple knows how to do background tasks when they want to).

Iweb - this is NOT a general purpose web editor (like Dreamweaver or Frontpage), but an editor for a templated web site. If you export all of you albums to Iweb, you will quickly get a rather awkward site. It is not easy to create a site which looks any different from the somewhat gimmicky templates.

idvd - take Quicktime movies and photos and create DVDs for playing in a DVD player. Photo slide shows are rather primitive compared to what you can do in Iphoto.

imovie - never used. I find the "pro" version of quicktime (with cut/paste features) much easier to use.

garageband - never used.

Obviously lacking in this suite is anything to do with creating documents which combine words and images. I guess you need to buy Iwork (and get some more unneeded programs).

Apple iLife 06. I had iLife 05 working well on an eMac, and then upgraded the operating system to Mac OS 10.5. That seemed to kill iLife 05. Version 06 is doing all that I expected and wanted, as I work on editing slide shows and videos. A good piece of software that is easy to use.

Apple has created a new version of iWork, and they provide no upgrade pricing, effectively sticking it to customers and vendors. If you buy this product, you will be stuck with the old version and have to pay FULL PRICE for the new version that contains a spreadsheet application.

And, yes, Apple deleted any comments complaining about the upgrade policy on their discussion boards.

"Better for lots of photos but not as organized" 2007-07-30

I purchased iLife '06 ONLY because iPhoto was maxed out (even though '05 states it supports 25,000 photos and we only have 14,000+). Well, the new iPhoto does work great and is fast, however... the way it organizes the photos on your hard drive is a nightmare. No longer are the photos stored in yearly folders, with month and day sub-folders. Now it stores everything by roll number - which is created when you upload the photos. So if you upload two photos that's a roll if you upload 2-weeks of photos, that's a roll, etc. If you post a lot of photos to the internet, you'll know why this is a HUGE pain. Their solution: save copies of the photos you want to upload into a new folder on your computer. How does that SAVE time?? I'm pretty disappointed and HOPE this is an issue they revisit going forward. As it is, it's screwed up the prior folders also so it's a good thing I have it all backed up on an external hard drive up to the point of installing the new version.

Nothing worked. The instruction book didn't get past page 4 before confusing G Major with F Major. The "Simple Entry Pallette" wasn't there in the display, and no clue how to find it. "Tutorial 1" wasn't available from any of the menus at the top of the page. "Hyperscribe" sort of works, but cleaning it up with edits, you're better off with pen and paper. After now weeks of trying to get this to work, I'm trashing it.

Makes manual entry of songs about as easy as it could be. For those more accomplished musicians, you can use the midi interface to play your songs in. Transposes keys easily. Issues I found are with coda handling and help. Little control over formatting of coda measures and reformatting of the entire document sometimes results in coda running off the page. There is a lot of help, but relative to things like how to format coda, entry and control of 1st & 2nd endings, etc,. it was limited and not very helpful. I ended up upgrading to the next verion. PrintMusic, which provided better handling and additional features I wanted.

I was disappointed, though, with the fact that Finale Songwriter 2007 is based on round notes and not shaped notes. I started playing guitar November of 2008. I have never took lessons I use mainly youtube and guitar tabs found online. using the tabs found online was fine for a while, but the only way I could hear the song is on I-tunes and I couldn't slow it down.

This program works great for what I need. I can go to the same site I normaly get tabs and get a .gp5 file and open it in guitar pro. I can then switch between different tracks whether its guitar 1 or 2 or drums. and even turn some of them off. you can slow the tempo down and really get the hang of tough tricky parts rather than listening to a full speed song on I-tunes with all the other stuff mixed in.

However I would like to know why the RSE Real Sound Engine dosent seem to work on my Mac Book Pro.

one other thing, It dosent come with an instruction book so its learn as you go method, (which im doing with the guitar right now, funny how that works out)

other than that, I like the program sofar. Maybe now I can learn a full song instead of just intro's and short riffs.

I have no complaint with this program. It does what it was intended for. I download lots of songs off...(not sure if allowed to say the site). The real guitar sounding feature tends to crash quite a lot, but it's no big deal for me. I just like the fact that I can download the music sheet for free and it allows me to slow down the tempo. I have not other complaints. Overall it's a great product.

I was disapointed to find that apparently you are unable to connect a midi instrument to the software to compose from the instrument. For me that is a huge drawback. On the upside, I find it easy and intuitive to compose and edit using the fretboard or keyboard tools provided with the software.

I have been using Print Shop with Windows XP, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how nice this version for the Mac is. It is MUCH better & easier to use than the one I had for the PC (it was also version 2, but maybe it was old). Lots of nice tool windows & some additional features.

I've been using Print Shop for a long time. Broderbund gave me a freebie 1.0 when I switched from PC to Mac several years ago and I still use Version 1.0. It's true that there's no comparison in the amount of art available as in the PC version, but there's so much clip art on the web! I finally learned to make clip art backgrounds transparent with Gimp so that I can use web clip art more easily. I recently completed a little book project for my granddaughters using Gimp, Corel, Adobe Elements AND Print Shop. I don't know the other programs as well as I know Print Shop so there were many things I just could not do with them that were so easy on Print Shop. It definitely has advantages with it's drag and drop features. You can save clip art right to iPhoto and then drag to Print Shop from there. You can do some cropping on PS, but it is generally easier with Gimp. Still, there are some photos that are easier to crop on PS and I use it frequently. You can create any color of background with any opacity level. You can layer without using multiple windows so you can see your entire project as you go along. It isn't for the professional, but it works great for home projects and I wouldn't want to be without it--yet. Naturally, being a fairly simple program, the learning curve is not so great as with more complicated software, but if you are going to do a project only now and then, that is a true advantage. It's a snap to make business cards and greeting cards if you have just the right size stationery. I gave this ranking because it is good within its class.

I used this program at least 15 years ago when I was a teacher and one would think they would have improved it over the years. Sure it's better than that first version, that my students loved, however the library of graphics is stale, and there are quirks that make it difficult to use. It would not take a lot to make "The Printshop" a great program however the company has not chosen to upgrade to my satisfaction. It's usable but could be improved.

I purchased this software to replace PrintMaster after having moved from PC to Mac to make school flyers and kids bday cards. I can do this on just about any program but what I most wanted was a nice, big, clip art collection. The clip art is just plain sad.

Wow! I'm really disappointed with this program. I worked with various versions of Print Shop when I had a PC and was excited to buy the same product for my Mac, but I am VERY unhappy with my purchase. I bought this program because I needed clip art and was tired of searching around on the Internet for pictures--but this program SUCKS in the clip art department. The photographs are all VERY dated, and look like they were taken in 1990--I'm talking big overly teased hair, high wasted tapered jeans with baggy sweaters and ridiculously large glasses. For an $80 dollar purchase, the quality of the photos are completely UNACCEPTABLE! Even the pictures not involving people look dated. If you want this product simply for layouts and labels (iWork does not have label making capabilities) then sure buy this, but I would honestly just say go buy Microsoft Office for Mac with Publisher--you'll be happier with the fact that you can download thousands of clip art and images from their site for free.

Take home message: DON'T BUY THIS!

"Great way to get Logic Studio, even if you have an old version of Express" 2009-10-12

I had Logic Express 8, so not only would this be an upgrade, but an update as well. According to the website, this upgrade package would even work from older versions of Logic Express. Given that buying an older version of Express and upgrading can be cheaper than buying Logic Studio directly, I thought this must be too good to be true. I called Apple, and the person I spoke to wasn't sure it would work, either.

Well, I just got my copy yesterday, and I can vouch that it works perfectly, at least for upgrading/updating Logic Express 8. When you consider the overwhelming array of instruments and software that you get with Logic Studio (9 DVDs worth!) this makes it just about the best deal in software I've ever seen, even at this three figure price. It's like having a recording studio and the worlds biggest hardware rack right in your laptop.

If you've been playing around with Logic Express, and are thinking about getting Logic Studio, I can assure it's worth it, especially through this upgrade path. If you're new to Logic, I recommend getting a used copy of Logic 8, and then if it turns out you'd like to get the full version, you'll be able to get Logic Studio 9 for probably less than buying it outright.
